We will begin this session with an effort to sketch out your vision for how Moodle can be used to transform the learning and teaching in your courses. Next, you will walk through important concepts within some models of course Moodles that could serve as guides to help you visualize, plan, develop and implement Moodle during your courses. Finally, you will learn about some key Web 2.0 and digital tools can be integrated into your Moodle to explicitly engage, support, and enhance student learning in your courses.

Participants will:
  • Explore their vision for Moodle use in their course;
  • Explore pedagogical principles and effective practices of adding Moodle as part of a stand alone or blended learning and teaching approach;
  • Explore basic Web 2.0 and digital tools to support their use of Moodle.




I. Begin With the End in Mind (15 minutes)

What is your vision for how Moodle could be leveraged for learning and teaching in your course?

I want to use Moodle in my course to....

II. Let's Moodle!

How will the students in my courses learn while using Moodle? Constructivism, Social Constructivism, and Connectivism can all be adopted as the pedagogical approaches when using Moodle. In other words, students build knowledge through constant interaction and cooperation.

So the question then becomes...How do I adapt my lessons, rubrics and activities to create interactive experiences in Moodle?

Moodle can be leveraged in more innovative ways than to just upload documents and PowerPoints.
When using Moodle instructors can:
  • Ensure that students have a rich interactive multimedia experience;
  • Engage students in collaborative activities;
  • Encourage students to reflect on their learning experience.

III. Keep Students Engaged in Moodle (15 minutes)

Talking avatars can create a user-friendly online environment. Avatars can help you create a presence within your Moodle, as well as serve as mechanism for course corrections or "just-in-time" scaffolding.

Videos keep your students engaged. Video is ideal for modeling, scaffolding, and connecting with students.

Podcasts can enhance students learning experience. Podcast can provide students with extra instruction or feedback outside the classroom.

When you play with Moodle and use it, it will not only benefit you but your students as well. But please, don't take my word for it. Try it!
